Apart from being an advocate, the 38-year-old (as in 2018) advocate is the Chairperson of ‘Voice For Rights,’ an NGO working for human rights, and also works for ‘CRY,’ a Delhi based NGO for protection of child rights.

Family, Caste & Husband

Deepika belongs to a Kachwaha Rajput Hindu family of Karihama village, Kupwara district, Jammu & Kashmir, India [1]. She has three sisters Neelam Raina, Rain Raina, Palvee Raina, and one brother Rakesh Raina.

She is a well-settled married woman with a daughter Ashtami.

Career

She completed a degree in law from the National Law University in Jodhpur. After completing her law degree, Deepika practised as an advocate at the court of Jammu and Kashmir and gradually entered into the field of human rights. Since then, she has been fighting for human rights.

Controversy

Deepika Singh Rajawat was removed by the Kathua rape victim’s family as their attorney in November 2018. She could not appear in the court’s proceedings in Pathankot because of security reasons. The victim’s family went to the Pathankot Sessions Judge Court and submitted that the prosecution’s case is to be dealt with further by SS Basra, special public prosecutors, and Jagdishwar Kumar Chopra, District Attorney. They would be assisted by KK Puri, Harbhajan Singh, Mubeen Farooky and other advocates. She also faced criticism for taking advantage of the Case; as an image makeover.

Facts

In April 2018, Deepika appeared in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court on behalf of an 8 years old girl Asifa Bano, who was gang-raped and then murdered in Jammu & Kashmir’s Kathua district in January 2018.

She was the first person who filed a writ petition for Asifa’s case.

According to Deepika, she has been facing prejudice, and threats from her fellow colleagues to fight for Asifa.

Deepika received the Charkha fellowship and Ladli award for her work in the field of Juvenile Justice.

She has a tattoo on her left palm.
